An explosive number of meth labs in Central Alabama leaves authorities worried that no neighborhood is safe. In Talladega County the number of meth labs uncovered this year is already seven times higher than in all of 2006.
Police blame the dramatic increase on a new method of meth production, and it's being shared among dealers on the internet and even in some drug rehab centers. It's how they teach each other a new recipe to make the drug faster and in small spaces like inside a car. It's the recipe responsible for increasing the number of meth labs in Talladega county from 16 in 2006 to 122 this year.
It's called the shake and bake method and it can make meth in two hours or less. According to the Talladega County Drug Task Force, that method first appeared in Alabama in November 200. That marked a turning point when the numbers sky rocketed. this exclusive video being shared online by dealers teaches people how to make meth any place where no one is watching.
Busts have been made in rural parts of the county but also they've been reporting just blocks away from the police station. Tracking down people making meth with "shake and bake" labs costs a drug task force just as much money as taking down a large operation. That's why district attorney Steven Giddens will appear before Talladega City Council Monday evening pleading for continued financial support for next year.
A quick footnote to this story. It's believed one of the first people to share the shake and bake recipe in alabama did so at a drug rehab facility in Oxford. Users trade secrets everywhere.
