(Sports Network) - The United States men's water polo team was handed its first loss of the Beijing Olympics on Thursday, dropping a 4-2 decision to Serbia at Yingdong Natatorium.
The Serbs led 2-1 at halftime and extended the advantage to 4-1 after three quarters.
Neither team displayed much offensive prowess in the contest as the squads combined for just six goals on 50 total shots. It was the lowest-scoring Olympic men's water polo match since Australia beat Greece, 4-2, at the 1980 Moscow Games.

"It was a pretty defensive game," said USA center back Jeffrey Powers. "We had a bad shooting day. Both teams were tired and sluggish on their shots.
The Americans are 2-1 in Group B play and will have their next match Saturday against Croatia, who defeated Germany, 13-5, on Thursday. Italy routed China, 19-7, in the other Group B match.
In Group A, Hungary beat Spain, 8-5, Montenegro downed Greece, 10-6, and Australia defeated Canada, 8-5.
