Birmingham, AL - While some people say the new dome will be a big boost to Birmingham, those against the project say it will be a massive economic bust.
About 15 protesters showed up at the groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday taking the opportunity to scream and shout in opposition to the dome. Calling it a 'doomed dome' and a 'blunder dome,' many of them say the multi-million dollar project will be a waste of taxpayer's money. They say there's no plan to build it, budget for it, let alone book it if it's ever completed. Many protesters believe this 'build it and they will come' mentality is a recipe for disaster. And they say they base their beliefs on past actions of certain city leaders.
"Larry Langford has run so many things into the ground and this is just another one of them." says Ian Hoppe, dome protester.
"Larry Langford is bankrupt in Fairfield, he bankrupted Jefferson County and then we voted him in to bankrupt the city of Birmingham," says Mia Fiterman, dome protester.
"Put it (money) toward something tangible. Something we really need. Firemen, policemen, or how about a bonus for our teachers," says Dewayne Dent, dome protester.
Construction on the dome won't begin for at least one year.
