Birmingham, AL - Some popular prescription pain pills must warn people against deadly overdoses .
That's an order today from the Food and Drug Administration to the makers of Darvocet, Darvon and its generic versions including propoxyphene (pro-POX-eh-feene).
The FDA's action means that patients soon will receive a special pamphlet with every bottle that stresses the risk.
Consumer-health advocates have linked the 50-year-old drug to hundreds of deaths, from suicide and accidental overdoses.

You may be surprised about what doctors found out.
Experts now say, the drugs commonly used to treat heartburn and acid reflux may actually cause heartburn.
The new study by Copenhagen University researchers in Denmark found that the medication known as proton pump inhibitors actually produced heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion.
Prilosec, Nexium are examples of PPIs.
The doctors tested Nexium in healthy volunteers for eight weeks.
They believe that the acid suppressive drugs are necessary treatment.
But scientists suggest that overprescribing them may be causing harm.
The study appears in the July issue of Gastroenterology .
