West Jefferson, AL - An elusive suspect who's been running from police since April is now in custody.
28 year-old Christopher Laye, of Sumiton, was arrested around 4a.m. Sunday in the town of West Jefferson. He is currently in the Walker County Jail. He faces charges of attempted murder, theft and unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance.
The charges stem from crimes police say Laye committed in April when he led a half a dozen law enforcement agencies on a wild goose chase across three counties. Investigators say within a matter of 24 hours, Laye resisted arrest during a meth bust in Walker County, stole a police car and tried to run over a sheriff's deputy. He then fled the scene but was later spotted at an empty trailer on Highway 91 in Cullman County. Law enforcement officers surrounded the trailer and eventually threw tear gas inside. But after an eight hour standoff, investigators discovered Laye was no where to be found.
Now, two and a half months later, Laye is arrested in West Jefferson somewhere near Pelos Circle. The Walker County Sheriff says the U.S. Marshal's Office assisted in his arrest.
News of his capture has nearby residents relieved. They say it's frightening to think a man wanted for attempted murder was on the loose for months.
"I think it's good. I'm glad that he's finally caught. He's been here in West Jefferson. I mean, I've got a kid, and I've got a five month year-old too and it's dangerous," says Aimee Brasfield, West Jefferson resident.
"I'm glad. We don't need him out here. We've got kids and stuff. We don't need him out here on the roads," says Paige Nugent, Jasper resident.
Laye may face additional charges in both Cullman and Blount counties. We'll post more information as soon as it becomes available.
