The economic downturn is keeping many teens out of work, in fact Forbes magazine reports more are looking for work than anytime in more than 40 years.
The business magazine reports the teen unemployment rate is 24%, the highest it has been since 1965.
Teens make up just 4% of the nation's workforce, but they account for a 22% increase in unemployment for the month of June. It is worse now because some of those teens are having to compete with more-qualified adults for the same positions.
Even places such as Alabama Adventure say it is hiring more adults. Brian McDuff says when the park is hiring for any job, it tries to accommodate everyone.
"It's probably about 50/50 on what we hire, you know as far as teen to adult ration," McDuff said. "But it's definitely down, the teen employment is down at the park this year."
The nation's unemployment rate rose to 9.5% in the month of June. More than 14,000,000 Americans, adults and teens, reported being out of work last month.
