Turning clunk into cash, some local car dealerships are pulling out all the stops to get consumers back in the showroom.

The Recession has forced many drivers to stick with the same cars longer, finding the repair costs cheaper than the replacement costs. So, in an effort to push 'new' car sales, several dealerships in the Birmingham area have recently put 'new' incentives on the table.

Riverchase Kia, on Highway 31 in Pelham, is now offering potential buyers a minimum of $5,000 to trade in their current car.

"Anything you can push, pull, drag or get towed in here we're going to give you $5,000 minimum trade to it," says Daryl Badeaux, Finance Director at Riverchase Kia.

Buyers may also qualify to get thousands of dollars in additional discounts. Riverchase Kia offers rebates for active military members and students who recently graduated from an accredited university or college. The dealership has a competitive bonus program and also offers a program called 'Owner's Loyalty.'

"If you trade in another Kia you're going to get more money towards that," says Daryl Badeaux.

Tameron Hyundai, on Highway 31 in Hoover, recently launched it's new Assurance Gas Lock Promotion. It offers new car buyers $1.49 per gallon gas for one year.

"The $1.49 would go to the consumer and the difference would be billed to Hyundai," says Dennis Lauzon, Tameron Hyundai GM.

Tameron Hyundai also offers up to $3,000 in rebates on most models. It offers 10 year warranties and Hyundai will even buy your car back if you lose your job.

"With no negative impact on credit or any responsibility falling back on the customer," says Lauzon.

Both Tameron Hyundai and Riverchase Kia plan to take part in the new Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009, otherwise known as the federal Cash for Clunkers program. That means more trade-in incentives to come.
