Birmingham, AL - Two Birmingham Police supervisors are on unpaid suspension in connection with the videotaped beating of Anthony Warren.
One is a sergeant, who will be off the job for 30 days & reassigned to another unit. The other is a captain who was a lieutenant when the incident happened in January of 2008. He is off the job for 15 days without pay.
A dash camera in a Birmingham Police cruiser shows Warren leading officers on a high-speed chase before his van runs off the side of the road and crashes. Warren is thrown from the van. Officers are then seen sitting on top of Warren, hitting and punching him. Warren was unconscious at the time, but officers say they didn't realize this.
The 27 year old is behind bars for the chase. He has however filed suit against five of the officers, among other defendants. The FBI
(web) and Alabama Bureau of Investigation are also investigating the incident.
Birmingham Police say an internal investigation has consumed more than 1500 man hours.
