Gadsden, AL - A deadly chase, an injured toddler and a bloody trail ends with late night police shooting that killed a man on Wednesday.
Sedrick Bernard Cox of Gadsden tried to escape the law. And in the last moment of his life investigators believe he pulled a knife on an officer. That would lead to a fatal gun shot. Only one person witnessed it all. She simply followed police orders - but it's a wake up call she'll never forget.
Glenis Pruett wasn't involved, but the deadly case just happened to end in her backyard while she was watching from the kitchen window.
She says, "It's very bizarre to have that happen in your own backyard."
When Pruett heard her dog barking early Wednesday she looked in her back yard and saw a man hiding in the corner. Suddenly two police officers jumped her fence.
According to Pruett, "You don't really know what to think. It's like what on earth has this guy done, what happened?"
Moments before police began the chase by following a trail of blood. It began at a home on Raley Street one block over. Someone inside called 9-11 and reported that two people had just been stabbed. It's the same home where investigators say a one-year old had been reportedly abused and burned the day before. Police had been searching for the man responsible since that first call. Cox is accused of injuring all three people. Once police corned him in a back yard on Hoke Street, he allegedly pulled a knife on two officers.
Pruett says she heard an officer shouting commands to Cox. She explains, "He either said get down or put it down."
Next, she heard the gunshot. She says, "I heard pop, pop, pop, pop like that and I was thinking oh Lord. I knew what happened."
According to a press release from Gadsden Police both of the stabbing victims underwent surgery and are recovering. The one year old was taken to Children's Hospital for treatment. The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is investigating the shooting while the officer who pulled the trigger takes leave. That's standard procedure in any police shooting case.
