Birmingham, AL - According to Jefferson County Commissioners, a judge's decision to block the county from cutting Sheriff Mike Hale's budget will force more layoffs. The county voted Tuesday to reduce the county's budget by $31 million. All departments were asked to cut 33 percent from their budgets. Sheriff Hale filed for and was granted a temporary restraining order meaning he does not have to cut his spending by $5 million for the remainder of the fiscal year. Commissioners say the only way to make up the difference is to cut more money from other departments. A hearing is scheduled for July 13th. At that time, the sheriff's attorneys will ask the judge to issue an injunction barring further cuts. Attorneys for the county have filed a request with the Alabama Supreme Court to dismiss the temporary restraining order.
