Birmingham, AL - The Mayor of Irondale made it clear his citizens do not want a strip club near his city. That's why he appealed to Birmingham's public safety committee to not to allow a topless dance club to open on Derby Parkway. Dozens of people came to that meeting to support that. The meeting grew so large it had to be moved from a meeting room to council chambers. Birmingham resident, Linda Grissom told the committee, "I also have a petition here with 167 signatures of people that oppose this in the area and what it will bring and what it will mean to the exit there."
She was not the only person to make impassioned pleas to the committee asking it not to grant the license but the attorney representing those opposed Alton Parker brought it down to the bottom line of dollars and cents saying if the license is granted Birmingham will lose development for the area including an office park. He told committee members, "I have the plans for that building and the plans for a park i'd like to submit to show that we will not be building that in the city of Birmingham if this license is granted."
Don Tyler one of the owners of the Derby Junction nightclub says his club will bring lots of business to the area from convenience stores to food establishments if people will give change a chance, "this is a change... change is hard for people to accept... but in order to grow you've got to make changes... we're bringing the change out there."
The committee denied the license application. It now goes to a vote before the full council on July 7th.
