Employees for the city of Birmingham will soon be working longer days but have a shorter work week.

Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford says the new 4-day work week schedule will start next week and include most of the city's 4,000 employees.

Officials hope the plan will help employees cut their gas costs and save the city money by lowering utility usage.

Langford has been featured on several national news networks since he announced the plan last month, but refused to be interviewed by Middle Eastern news network Al-Jazeera English on Tuesday.

He said he opposes the network's coverage of terrorist activities.

University of Alabama journalism professor George Daniels said the mayor must be open to the international press if he's serious about landing the Olympics for 2020.
