Maylene - Annual memorial services have been held at Cedar Grove Cemetery years before Civil War troops marched through Maylene.
More than 100 years later the cemetery is now a historic landmark. The Griffin family donated the land for the cemetery 173 years ago.
Decades later the descendants of the first families buried there gathered with the families of others interred in the cemetery for the unveiling of a historic marker.
"So I want to make sure that for me and my children, and our children's children, this would be a place they could come to remember for, you know, for the rest of their lives," Don Martin, the Cedar Grove historian said.
Cedar Grove cemetery is the 16th Shelby County cemetery to receive historic status.
