When the wrong person gets one of your checks, or just your account number, the results can be disastrous.
Crime Stoppers detectives hope you can recognize, and help identify, suspects in two recent cases. Your anonymous tip could lead to a cash reward. Details on both cases are below.
Business Scammed: Detectives say a business in Vestavia Hills has been scammed out of thousands of dollars by some suspects who somehow got the checking account number belonging to that business. Police say the suspects used the account number in order to manufacture their own fake checks. The suspects are accused of then cashing those checks.
Male and female suspects are seen on surveillance video from banks in Fultondale and Montgomery. Crime Stoppers needs someone to offer the
names of those suspects. Detectives also want to know where the suspects can be found.
"That's where we come in," said Fultondale Detective Allen Rogers. "We've got to try to identify these people, catch them, and prosecute them and hopefully make them pay some restitution."
Counter Checks Stolen: The suspect in this case is a woman seen on surveillance video from a Compass Bank in Trussville. Police say the woman is cashing a counter check that was stolen out of car in Oxford.
As in the above case, Crime Stoppers needs to hear from anyone who can identify the suspect with the counter check.
"She may have some more in her possession, or she may have tried to cash more at another date," Birmingham Detective James Lewis said.
If you can help in either case, call Crime Stoppers now at (205) 254-7777. You never give your name. There's no Caller ID. And Crime Stoppers cannot call you to testify in court. Plus, there's a cash reward if your tip is the
first tip that leads to an arrest.
