Birmingham police may be narrowing in on the location of the teenage girl who, detectives say, abducted a baby boy Thursday night.
According to Lt. Henry Irby, police received a tip around 7:09 p.m. Friday about the whereabouts of the red Ford Crown Victoria in which 16-year-old Antoinetta Smith reportedly drove off with 1-year-old Treshon Williams nearly 24 hours earlier. Police located the vehicle on Tuscaloosa Ave. and then proceeded to follow it to a residence on Terrace R in Ensley.
However, neither Smith nor Williams was inside the vehicle. Instead, an adult woman and two young boys stepped out. Police are questioning that woman about her involvement in the case, Irby said.
At some time Friday evening, police believe Smith fled the Terrace R residence on foot with Smith in tote. While detectives believe the baby is not in any imminent danger, they say the longer he is in the care of the 16-year-old, the more "hazardous" the situation will become.
"By all indications, the 1-year-old is okay," Irby said during an impromptu news conference Friday night on Terrace R. "At this time we hope Antoinette is looking at this story and that she calls the police department and/or the mother of Treshon. We need to get him back to his mom as quickly as possible because (Smith) is not equipped to take care of a 1-year-old at this time."
Irby said he was unaware if Smith has any baby clothing, diapers or food to care for the baby.
The scene Friday night on Terrace R was hectic. Multiple television news trucks, cameras and reporters flooded the small neighborhood streets, and several marked and unmarked police vehicles surrounded the area. Dozens of curious neighborhood onlookers gathered outside to watch the commotion unfold. The scene was cleared, with no sign of Smith or Wiliams, within four hours.
An Amber Alert remains in effect for Smith and Williams, who disappeared from William's home Thursday night after police say Smith stole Williams' mother's car.
If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of Smith and/or Williams, call police at 254-0800.
