With high gas bills and produce scares - like the recent tomato recall - some shoppers are turning to home grown foods. Shoppers like Rosa Whatley. When she spotted a roadside produce stand on 10th Street in Anniston, Whatley couldn't resist. "I'm just a regular country girl and I love my fresh vegetables and everything." Shoppers already pay a lot for gas and some worry about food safety at the grocery store. It's enough for a lot of shoppers to switch to homegrown food. To Whatley, "It takes much better... much much better because some of the tomatoes I buy at the grocery store, it seems like they have a lot of water in them." But what if you can't find one of those road side stands the next time you're looking for a fresh apple? In that case turn to BuyLocalAlabama.com. The website links shoppers to fresh foods grown in Alabama. Some vendors will even ship to your home. You can also search by county for vendors in your area. Aclick on calhoun reveals a new farmers market opening this week in Anniston. Melanie Hill with the Spirit of Anniston explains, "With everything going on with the produce and the gasoline prices, we're trying to give an alternative for the local people to do." Every Saturday this summer, Zinn Park will transform into an outdoor farmer's market where all food is grown in alabama. Hill assures "the produce that you will purchase here is very safe." It's also approved by the Farmers Market Authority. A seal of freshness for shoppers on the hunt for homegrown produce.
