Greensboro, AL - The parents of four students at Greensboro West Elementary school in Hale County left school walking home. Their father Stacy Averette says his kids missed the bus because they thought he was going to pick them up. Averette says when they told a teacher his four children age 6 to 9 were told to start walking home. He says they did so down the very busy Highway 25 where his sister noticed them as she was driving by. He's furious school officials let the kids leave campus. They live 20 miles from school. But, superintedent Frank Stegall says their investigation reveals processes were in place to keep the kids safe and no one ever told the students to walk home. Stegall says the students circumvented procedures to leave campus and as they were walking away staff members thought a susbstitute teacher walking near them was a parent. Stegall says the students pickup arrangements change often and he believes that also played a role in the confusion. Averette says that's no excuse. He wants someone punished for the mishap, but school officials insist no one did anything wrong.
