Numerous tech myths have been going around for a long time- many are false, but some are totally true.
1. Using third party ink cartridges can void your printer's warranty.
False. Your warranty is good even if you use off-brand cartridges- but if the third party ink directly damages your printer, the repair may not be covered. Printer manufacturers do say you may not get the same print quality with off-brand ink.
2. Macs are immune to viruses and spyware.
False. Malicious software can affect Macs just as much as it can affects PCs. In fact, at a recent hacking competition, a brand new MacBook air was compromised with an online scripting attack in less than two hours. What keeps Macs safe is that Apple's market share is much smaller than the market share for PCs. Most hackers and scripters would rather go after a bigger target.
3. Your personal data can be pulled form your old hard drives.
True. The best way to keep your personal data safe is to keep it off your hard drive. If you have to store it, you merely need to take a few protective steps when you get rid of your computer or upgrade it. Find a program that will write random data over what's on your hard drive. This is a much more thorough way to erase data than merely formatting the drive. Of course, physically destroying the drive will keep anyone from pulling your data. You're on your own on how to do this!
