This morning just after midnight Sheriff's patrol deputies responded to a 911 call about a burglary in progress at a plumbing business located in the 5800 block of Service Road in the Trussville area.
The caller described the suspect fleeing in a white van and Trussville Police was notified. A Trussville Police officer spotted the van and stopped it on Chalkville Mountain Road.
Deputies went to his location and took custody of the suspect. A subsequent search of the van and Plumbing property revealed that the suspect had cut through a fence, broke into several service trucks and stole a large quantity of copper tubing.
The suspect admitted after questioning that he broke into a plumbing store earlier in the night on First Avenue near downtown Birmingham but fled after the alarm went off. He then located a Water Works Truck on Southside Birmingham and stole copper tubing from the truck.
28 year old Jeffrey Scott Reed of Gardendale was arrested. Reed has a history of Burglary and Theft charges. He is being held in the Jefferson County jail for Theft of Property 2nd degree, Possession of Burglar Tools and 3 counts of Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Vehicle with bonds totaling $21,000. Additional charges are pending. The stolen copper was recovered and returned.
