Close to 1000 children, teachers, and friends packed into an a gym in support of one little boy. Eight-year old Tucker Beam is battling cancer for the second time in his life. Friday has officially been named Tucker Beam day by Shades Crest Elementary in Hoover.

Scott Elgin watches a screen to see his best friend and classmate eight year old Tucker Beam.

"He's a nice kid and funny person," says Elgin.

Elgin's not alone. The entire school, among others, came out in Tucker's support . Tucker joined them online via webcam from his room at Children's Hospital.

"I would really like to be there," says Tucker.

In his hospital room Tucker is like any other little boy. Giving his mom an early mother's day gift and talking about his favorite football teams. His treatment though is brutal. Weeks on weeks of chemotherapy to attack the bone cancer in his right thigh. A new medication to his daily regimen has just started to shrink the tumor. The money raised for Tucker Beam Day will allow tucker's mom more time at the hospital.

"We want her to be able to stay with Tucker and be able to stay with him and not have to worry about all those things that we as parents worry about outside this realm," says Tucker's teacher, Galey Thomas

The ceremonial ribbon cutting starts in Tucker's hospital room, and then moved to the gym where his father also cut the red tape.

Hundreds of busy feet pound the pavement, all for Tucker Beam. A hero and inspiration for so many who have come out to show their selfless support for this little boy fighting a big illness.

"It's been truly a blessing. Truly a blessing," says Jason Beam, Tucker's Dad.

The goal was to raise $10,000, but at last check more than $27,000 has been donated to Tucker and his family, to help cover medical expenses.

The walk ended at 2:30, but it's still not too late to donate. You can go to any Regions Bank and give to the Tucker Beam fund.

You can also go to his personal website to learn more about his story.
