A message from Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper:
"On November 11th, 2007, a group of thugs robbed and killed Clifton Smith. It happened at the Valley Brook Apartments, along Gallant Drive. That's in the northeast corner of the city.
Smith was leaving his girlfriend's apartment to go to the store, but he was stopped on the stairway by three men. People nearby heard the men telling Smith to give up his money.
The victim was then forced back into his girlfriend's apartment. The girlfriend was taken to another room by one of the men, while another man stayed with Smith and the girlfriend's little daughter. Then, Smith was shot several times, and the three men left the apartment.
Our question to the public is simple. Can you lead us to any of those three men? You can give Crime Stoppers a clue, and you'll never give your name. So you don't have to worry about retaliation.
We need to lock up whoever caused this. We want to make sure they never kill again.
But we cannot do it without someone getting the courage to call.
You can reach Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777. Or log on to www.birminghamcrimestoppers.org to send an encrypted tip. And join us in our efforts to make Birmingham a safer place to live.
