Finals are underway at Samford University, and that's anxiety enough for any college student. On Friday morning, though, students had another reason to be anxious. They received text messages and e-mails alerting them that a man had been seen on campus with a gun.
A campus security officer spotted the man shortly before 5 a.m., while making a routine patrol of the north parking deck. The man reportedly put the gun in the officer's face and then ran off. The university immediately went into lockdown. Officers began the search for the suspect at two nearby residence halls. They later searched the rest of the campus buildings.
By 7:30 a.m., when the suspect still hadn't been found, university officials decided it was safe to lift the lockdown. Students who live on campus were told they could leave their dormitories, and commuting students were allowed to leave the parking lot, where they had been diverted during the search.
Homewood police are continuing the search, now that it's assumed the suspect left campus. The desciption provided by Samford University is of a black man, wearing all black clothes and a black head-covering. He's described as being of average build, around 5'10". Anyone with information is asked to call the police department.
