The State Board of Education has unanimously voted to change the requirements for Alabama's high school diploma.

The board also passed an emergency rule amendment to allow seniors who have not passed all five sections of the high school exit exam to graduate this year.

The votes drew shouts and applause from the audience at the Thursday meeting where several parents spoke and told of their children's' struggle to pass some parts of the exam.

The changes would become mandatory for all school systems in the 2008-09 school year, but some could start on a voluntary basis this fall.

The biggest change automatically enrolls all students for the state's Advanced Diploma and gives parents the choice of opting their children out to get the Basic Diploma.

Currently all students get the Basic Diploma unless they sign up for the advanced track.

I'm not saying that all the students are dumb or incapable, nor the parents. I'm singling out a select few who don't want to try and whose parents don't want to make the effort to support or reinforce the importance of getting an education to their kids.  Instead, the parent(s)  go into a classroom and threaten a teacher when that teacher gives low marks to their child.  And yes, that is exactly what happens. I have SEVERAL school teachers who work in my employ. I do know what happens in the education system on the INSIDE from these teachers and it is APPALLING!

And this emergency amendment is the same thing: people complaining that class is too hard, tests are too hard and that their kids just can't do it. - So the people in charge, who are afraid of a backlash or just plain don't want the students left behind because of the money it costs, make an emergency amendment that passes kids to graduation who otherwise WOULD NOT PASS OR GRADUATE.  And that is WRONG. When it comes to education, there should be ZERO tolerance and ZERO exceptions. Period.

Now, seriously, justify this amendment to me.  Tell me in what case, reason or cause should there ever be a "dumbing down" so that a student can pass or graduate?

You can't. Period.  Because it's not justifiable.

When I was in high school and college, if you didn't pass, there were no meetings, no amendments, etc. You just had to stay and work  even harder in order TO pass.

So yes, to the kids who do graduate and make the grade, absolutely > Congratulations!  You worked hard and you made it. And to the parents of those kids, good for you too!

But for the ones who just think it's unfair/not fair or wrong that your little precious should be able to graduate with all the other kids whether they meet the criteria or not !?  You're the people that are the problem and I blame you/ these parents, not so much the children.
