Ordinary hard drives may be on the way out. Some companies are now making Solid State Drives (SSD). They have no moving parts, so they're more energy efficient, create less heat, and run a smaller risk of failing. The technology is similar to the memory chips currently used in computers. The biggest problem is that SSD are still very expensive- but in the coming years, prices should drop rapidly.
A company called Mempile is also advancing storage technology by re-thinking the CD. A translucent yellow disc they're developing will be able to hold up to one Terabyte of data. This is achieved with a new reading and writing technology that allows hundreds of layers of data on one disc. Current CD and DVD technology on the market allows just one layer in most cases.
