The Birmingham Regional Planning Commission believes it has found one solution to the growing traffic problem, while cutting gasolne costs for commuters. By the end of the month, the planning commission will have six new park and ride locations each at metro Birmingham churches.
After struggling to find new park and ride locations via new construction sites or shopping centers, the commission found a willing partner in the faith community. " We want to serve the community and protect God's creation", said Rev. Amy Vaughn, Pastor First United Methodist Church Center Point. Vaughn believes because the church is non-profit it allows for more opportunities to expand the park and ride effort. The Birmingham Regional Planning Commission concurs, and plans to rapidly expand park and ride using the faith community.
The first six churches are : Hueytown Baptist, First Baptist Pelham, First United Methodist Center Point, Forestdale Church of God, Northpark Baptist Trussville, and First Baptist Trussvile.
