Hoover, AL - Hoover is the nation's first city to use wood waste fuel to power some of its police cars. Mayor Tony Petelos accepted the first shipment of the fuel Thursday afternoon. It's manufactured in Livingston, AL at Gulf Coast Energy's demonstration plant. The clean burning fuel is made from wood waste collected across the city. It is shipped to Livingston where it is processed into fuel. Mayor Petelos says, "It's not only huge for Hoover, it's huge for this country." U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions and Congressman Artur Davis were both on hand for the fueling ceremony.
Many of Hoover's city vehicles and machines are already running on alternative fuel. Since 2005 some police units have operated on E-85. The city also continues to make bio-diesel for use in the city's fleet. In 2007, the city started a recycling program to collect used cooking oil from residents and businesses in order to make the fuel As of this month, the program has processed 25,000 gallons of used cooking oil.
