As the economy weakens, certain types of crimes could become more prevalent.
Case in point: debit card thefts. Now, Crime Stoppers is working to identify and arrest two suspects in a recent case from Trussville.
"With the economy where it is today, there's going to be a lot more of this going on," said Jefferson County Detective Bill Musgrove. "The price of groceries is up. The price of gas is up."
Surveillance video shows two suspects using a stolen debit card at a Trussville store. The hope is that someone will recognize the suspects and provide a tip to Crime Stoppers on where the two men can be found.
Detectives accuse the men of stealing the debit card from an elderly woman at a nearby dollar store. Police said it didn't take long for the men to rack up $1100 in charges.
"They didn't seem to be very upset at using this card," Musgrove added. "So they've either done it before, or they're not afraid of being caught."
If you can help police identify or find the suspects, call Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777. You can also submit a tip online by logging on to www.birminghamcrimestoppers.org.
