An Annison-area woman who tried to save her dog after it was struck in a deadly hit-and-run crash was also fatally hit by another vehice that fled from the scene, according to Alabama State Troopers.
The woman, Bridgett Craft, 48, of Wellborn, was walking her dog along Eulaton Road, about two miles west of Anniston, around 8:20 p.m. Friday when an oncoming vehicle struck her dog and kept going. Once Craft had darted into the road to try and save the animal, she was struck by yet another vehicle, which also fled the scene. Both Craft and the dog were killed instantly.
"It's shock. It's disbelief. It's the worst thing I've ever seen," said one woman who stumbled upon the accident scene moments after it happened and parked her car in the road with the headlights on to alert other drivers.
"I said, 'well, I'm going to leave my vehicle here because I'm afraid someone might come around here real fast and hit her again,'" the woman said. She did not want to give her name while the suspects are still at large for fear of retribution.
Residents near the accident scene say drivers speed up and down Eulaton Road every day, and they are concerned that the next victim may be a small child. A little league baseball park is only a few blocks away from where Craft and her dog were killed, and the Wellborn Elementary school is just a few hundred yards away.
"Nobody deserves to die like that," the woman said, teary-eyed. "Nobody."
State troopers are searching for a pick-up truck that matches the following description: a red or maroon Dodge pick-up truck with 4-wheel drive and a possible lift-kit on it (which makes the vehicle sit higher off the ground); extensive damage to the front grill; and an Auburn University (web|news) sticker on the rear window.
