Teens are known for playing video games, and hanging out with friends. Some people say kids today don't get involved and help others. But I want to tell you about a group of young people from Briarwood Christian School who rolled up their sleeves and helped a church in East Lake.
Reverend Larry Cockrell, pastor of Household of Faith Church says the church has been a real blessing to the community... it's provided a place for young people to go after school. And recently Briarwood Christian eighth graders came to help clean up and fix up.. It was a real blessing for the pastor.
The crackle of rocks on a shovel could be heard rising from the church yard. Students helped weed and place the rocks to make a wheelchair ramp look better. But it was more than that... it was a way for the students to change lives by using their sweat.
Brenda. Is this hard work?
MARGAN White. Yes ma'am it is a little bit harder than math class. I'm just happy we're out here cause God said we should come and help others and help our brothers n' sisters in Christ.
Brenda. Good job.
From freshening up a wheelchair with rocks. ... to putting in a playground.... it was a labor of love.
Raymond Woods a Briarwood Christian School student says, "It'll feel good in the end when you know someone is appreciating the work you're doing."
From putting in a playground to cleaning off the side walls of the church... to organizing a computer lab.
Trent Yates helped organize the computers. He says, It's taken a lot of hard work and I hope they appreciate it and they'll like it.
On this day.... the students were planting more than flowers, they were putting their hearts into this church in East Lake.
MARY RUNNELS is the homeroom teacher for this group of students. She says, They're working with all their heart if I could get em to do their math home work like this we'd have straight A students.
We want to be doers of the word, and not hearers only.
Rev. Cockrell was delighted and says he felt blessed. He says it's exciting to see the spirit of service alive and well at this day and time when so often young people are said to be selfish and don't want to get involved.
Several other groups from the eighth grade at Briarwood Christian school went to help other groups and people in need. It's a yearly project. But some of the students say they want to do this type of community service more often.
