Running anitvirus and antispyware programs regularly can help your computer keep running in tip-top shape.  But running those programs with Windows in Safe Mode can make the process even more effective.

When Windows starts, lots pf programs and services start with it.  However, some viruses and spyware can also start up.  Once they're started, it can be very hard to delete them.  This can reduce the effectiveness of your anitvirus and antispyware programs.

When you start Windows in Safe Mode, the computer only loads the files and programs it needs to run Windows.  That means the viruses and spyware can't load, and are much easier to clear off your machine.

To enter Safe Mode, start up your computer and repeatedly press the F8 key.  You will come to a menu asking how you would like to run Windows.  Select Safe Mode, or if you think you'll need a network connection, select Safe Mode with Networking.  You can then watch as Windows loads numerous system files.  When this is done, You'll come to your Windows desktop.  It may look a little different than it normally does, because Safe Mode does not load some of your video configuration settings.

Once you've run the programs to clean off your computer, simply reboot, and you'll be taken back to regular mode.
