Jefferson County Commissioners now have another month to come up with the money to make a 53 million dollar sewer debt payment. The commission unanimously approved a resolution accepting an agreement with banks and bondholders which gives the county until the middle of May to find the money or negotiate new terms with its creditors.
Commission President Bettye Fine Collins says, "This is good news as we continue to work forward in good faith particularly with the insurance companies of these bonds."
Commissioner Shelia Smoot is pleased with the agreement. She says the banks "are willing to work with us at the expense of not hurting this community and our ratepayers."
Commissioners hope by the time this agreement expires they will have worked out a long term solution to the sewer debt crisis.
