A new law enforcement task force will focus on eliminating violent gangs in four mostly rural counties in northeast Alabama.
The Safe Streets Task Force announced Monday will include the FBI (web) and 22 federal, state and local agencies operating in DeKalb, Etowah, Marshall and St. Clair counties.
The FBI agent supervising the operation, Robert F. Lasky, said officers already have been working on the project together for more than one year.
Last year, the FBI joined several local police agencies to announce the arrests of more than 350 people in an operation that targeted gang activity in northeast Alabama. That project was in response to allegations about methamphetamine dealing and Latin American gangs operating in rural areas.
