A 12-year-old Shelby County boy is dead after a motorcycle accident at a Tallassee motocross park.

Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin declined to release the boy's name.

Deputies responded to a call at 2:30 p.m. Friday that a boy had been involved in a motorcycle wreck at Monster Mountain located off Alabama 14 in Tallassee.

When deputies arrived they discovered the boy had been struck in the abdomen. He was airlifted to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery where he was pronounced dead.

The boy apparently lost control of his motorcycle after jumping a hill and being ejected. A second motorcyclist struck the boy. No charges were filed.

That's naturally the first thought that occurs to most any parent, I would guess. But I had to stop myself and think, according to the other reports on this, this boy was a class rider in his age bracket and had been doing this for a while, so, you have to look at all the other dirt bike riders out there or skateboarders or whatever and think to yourself: "They all started somewhere and most of them at early ages"..... they just don't become champs at the age of 18 all of a sudden, etc.

This was just a terrible tragedy that happened. Sure, if he hadn't been out there doing it, he might still be alive. BUT, who knows......they say when your number is up, your number is up. It might have happened just as well if he had been walking across the road or riding in the family car.

As morbid as the phrase has always sounded to me, it can be said he was doing what he loved doing the most, when he died.

My prayers to this family and I hope that people will be supportive of them and not blame them for what happened. At least it wasn't an act of direct negligence or irresponsibility.
