Some call it a financial facelift in limbo.
As the gaming battle continues to brew, not only are most Alabama bingo halls now closed but the plugs have also been pulled on dozens that were on the brink of opening. 3 new halls were expected to open soon in Midfield. If they had opened, the city would have received $750,000 in fees up front. Not to mention job creation and a reduction in vacant storefronts. While Midfield's mayor is confident the halls would have given the city a nice economic boost, he says he knew the risks involved.
"We never based our budget on bingo. So the old adage 'you don't miss what you never had.' We would have loved to have had it but we certainly don't miss it in the regard that we were dependent on bingo for our survival," says Gary Richardson, Midfield mayor.
Midfield is no stranger to budget woes, but the Richardson says its finances are currently in 'good shape.'
