Birmingham, AL - Employees at Alabama Aircraft Industries Incorporated have a message for the Alabama congressional delegation. It's a simple message. Don't let Boeing cut them out of a contract they've had since World War 2. 800 jobs are at stake for the people who work on refurbishing the K-C 135 refueling tanker plane. They say not only are their jobs at stake but also millions of dollars for Birmingham's economy.
11 employees are hoping to get the state's congressional delegation to put pressure on Boeing to continue subcontracting with A-A-I-I.
They know it's not just their jobs they're fighting for. They are also fighting for Metro Birmingham's economy. Russell Nix who works at . the plant and is one of the 11 going to Washington to lobby the state congressional delegation says their success is really important for the city. "All of your businesses that we support, grocery stores, mom and pop, everything insurance agencies, if you're not making a living, not bringing a paycheck home everyone in the community is affected."
And that's the message they will be giving to an already sympathetic Congressional delegation, that millions of dollars will be lost if our delegation doesn't get Boeing to change it's corporate mind and give AAII the same deal it's had for more than 50 years. But there is also something else these workers want. Worker Terry Mitchell says, "we want the opportunity to prove that we can help this nation and the people in it."
