Montgomery, AL - Electronic bingo moves to the forefront at the statehouse this week. On Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee will consider a bill to strip Gov. Bob Riley of his authority to direct criminal investigations. On Tuesday, committees in both the House and Senate will take up a proposed constiutional amendment to allow electronic bingo.
A bill, proposed by Rep. Marcel Black (D-Tuscumbia), would create an Alabama Gaming Commission. It would oversee 10 $100 million electronic bingo operations. The taxes would go the education trust fund and the state's general fund.
Sen. Roger Bedford (D-Russellville) is sponsoring a similar bill in the Senate. Both bills would allow voters to decide in November whether to ammend the state constitution to make the games legal.
