Metro Birmingham, Ala. - *Video will be shown Tuesday night at 10:00 on ABC 33/40 News and again Wednesday morning during Good Morning Alabama. The video will also be uploaded on this site Wednesday morning.*
Detectives are asking for anonymous tips from anyone who recognizes the suspects in two new cases. If your tip is the first to lead to an arrest, Crime Stoppers will pay you cash.
Food Stamp Money Stolen: Surveillance video shows crystal-clear images of a man and woman leaving the Roebuck Walmart on December 6. Detectives said the couple had just bought a cart full of groceries with a food stamp card that had been stolen from a woman in Center Point moments earlier.
"The card they used was the lady's EBT food card, and so she was in need of that card," Lieutenant Bill Musgrove said. "That's her groceries for her and her kids, and these two people could care less."
The food stamp card had been in the victim's purse, which she had left in her car when she went into a Center Point business. When the woman returned to her car, the purse, her food stamp card, and other items were gone.
Detectives said the man and woman in the surveillance video were shopping with the woman's cards within minutes of the theft. The suspects apparently tried to shop with the victim's cards later in the same day at the same Walmart.
"We need to know who they are, and where they're at, and we'll take it from there," Musgrove said. "And this'll be two less people you'll have to worry about when you go out somewhere and leave your belongings in your car."
Identity Theft Based on Stolen Wallet: Police released surveillance images of a man who is accused of stealing another man's identity. Detectives said it all started when the suspect got his hands on the victim's wallet.
"He took the time to manufacture a false driver's license, put his picture on it, the victim's name, and plus, he had the victim's other identification," Sergeant James Lewis said. "He actually took the identity of this man and posed to be this person."
Lewis said the suspect cashed checks from the victim's account at banks in Mobile, Gulfport, and Biloxi. The original wallet theft happened in Auburn. However, police believe the suspect may have ties to metro Birmingham.
"They have seen this guy frequenting Birmingham, so we're hoping that someone here can tell us who this guy is," Lewis said.
If you can help in either case: Call Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777. Also, you can text 7777 to CRIMES to begin submitting a tip through your cell phone. Or you can go to
www.birminghamcrimestoppers.org and click on the "submit an online tip" link.
No matter which method you choose, detectives will not be able to see your phone number or your name. Crime Stoppers never records its calls, and Crime Stoppers cannot call tipsters to testify in court. You will remain anonymous.
Detectives assign each tipster a private code number, and that is the only way they will know who you are. If your tip is the first to lead to an arrest, you may use your code number to claim a cash reward in either case. Even then, you will not have to give your name.
