Haleyville, AL - Early Thursday morning, a former city worker in Haleyville took his own life right outside the back door of city hall. Mayor Ken Sunseri tells ABC 33/40 a shotgun was used in the shooting. It's the policy of ABC 33/40 not to report suicides, but in this case it happened on city grounds. Also, there's been much speculation that since the worker suddenly resigned last month -- he was the subject of an on-going investigation into some Haleyville city workers. But, mayor Sunseri says that employee was NOT connected although he did work in the department where the investigation is primarily focused. Haleyville's city attorney says the investigation surrounds the "misuse of perhaps thousands of dollars in city funds." ABC 33/40 has learned that at-least one worker has been terminated and three others resigned because of the matter. Once the investigation is complete, findings will be turned over to the district attorney and eithics commission. The city attorney says he doesn't know whether the issues will rise to the level of city workers beiing prosecuted, but it's too early to tell. He says it will take approximately another 30-days before they complete the investigation.
