A north Alabama man charged in an illegal street race in Birmingham was in a Birmingham courtroom Thursday for a preliminary hearing. District Judge Sheldon Watkins sent the case against 27-year-old Brian Murphy of Elkmont to a Jefferson County grand jury. Murphy was charged with vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
Testimony indicated Murphy and another racer lost control and struck 29-year-old Lonnie King of Birmingham - a pedestrian who was videotaping the January 13th race in Pratt City.

The other driver, 32-year-old Yardley Potter of Ebro, Florida, has not been charged.
Authorities are still looking for Ladipo Bethea of Gretna, Florida. He faces a capital murder charge for the shooting death of 26-year-old Anthony Lett. Police said the victim was shot in a dispute over a large racing purse.
