Birmingham - Lipscomb Police Chief Conlin Payne will go on trial this summer on charges of child abuse. During a hearing Monday morning, Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Gloria Bahakel set a trial date of July 27th. Payne is accused of abusing the child of an acquaintance.
The incident allegedly occurred in October 2007. Prosecutors say Payne had been watching the child, who was later brought to Children's Hospital in Birmingham with signs of physical abuse. An investigation was begun, and charges were filed nearly one year later.
Payne was arrested in October 2008. He was placed on administrative leave from the Lipscomb Police Department. Payne pleaded not guilty to the charges and remains free on bond.
