Cordova - Two Walker County families are safe after being rescued from their homes in Cordova early this morning. The families live on Weaver Drive, which was flooded overnight when Cane Creek overflowed its banks. Chuck Lilley, second-in-command at the Cordova Police Department, was putting up a barricade on nearby Bevill Drive when he heard the residents calling his name.
A rescue effort was organized, with crews going part of the way in Lilley's pick-up truck. Once the water got half-way up the truck doors, however, they used a flat-bottom boat belonging to the Walker County Rescue Squad. Estimates were that the water surrounding the families' properties was around 8 feet deep. At the time, the houses, which stood on higher ground, had not flooded, but the residents were effectively trapped.
Kim Jones and Greg Weaver were brought to safety first, along with their three dogs. Then, a second trip was made to pick up the other family. By 5:30 a.m., everyone was on dry ground and thankful to be there. However, they still worried about their homes. Jones said that if the water were to keep rising, it would flood the house. She added that the area has seen flooding before, but "never to this extent."
