A man from Huntsville and another from Birmingham were killed at an illegal street race over the weekend, authorities said Monday as police cast doubt on the initial accounts of the fatalities. The coroner's office said Lonnie King, 29, of Birmingham died after being struck by one of two cars racing about 4:30 p.m. Sunday as a large crowd watched. King was reportedly videotaping the race when the collision occurred.

Pat Curry, a deputy Jefferson County coroner, said Anthony Lett, 36, of Huntsville died of a gunshot wound inflicted after the crash.

ABC 33/40 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? While initial reports indicated that Lett was fatally wounded for suggesting that someone needed to take King to a hospital, police Sgt. Cory Hardiman told The Birmingham News that an investigation had shown the account was incorrect.

"A dispute started after the accident and it was during the dispute the victim was shot and killed," he said. "It's related, but we don't have any evidence there was a dispute over taking anyone to the hospital."

Curry said a man from Florida put Lett in a car and drove him to UAB Hospital, where he was dumped out of the car and it left.

A video of what appeared to be the deadly crash was posted on the YouTube Web site, but the title suggests the race occurred on a street other than the one where the crash actually happened. YouTube includes many videos of what appear to be illegal drag races.

First off, they aren't folks. They're thugs and hoods and they are breaking the law.

If this "event" has been taking place forever, then the police could do something about it if they wanted to. The fact is, they simply choose not to.

And might I add, if you've seen the video, then you clearly see who the participants are that are breaking the law. The same goes for the strip of road out by the dog track in Roebuck. Does it surprise anyone that these masses are breaking the law as they so often do and could care less about what happens?

They go where they know law enforcement will just pat them on the back and tell them "Yo man, y'all can't be doin this right here out here, know what I mean?" And that's about the limit of punishment they will get. A brothah lookin out for a brothah.

I have worked with the Irondale PD to do something about the racing on John Rogers Drive, and Irondale PD is willing to put a stop to it and will, but the racers keep their illegal activity on the other side of the first bridge, which puts their actions out of the Irondale PD jurisdiction. So it lands in the lap of Birmingham....hence, that means that nothing will be done about it.

And don't bother complaining to Birmingham City Councilwoman Duncan. She ignores or gives zero regard to anyone who contacts her on any matter regarding lawlessness in the eastern area of Birmingham.
