THE TOUGH STUFF!
category: Faith

Before I glue on my eyelashes... I look to see if there are any sprouts of lashes coming through.  I'm amazed each day when I inspect the top of my eye lid.  There is one  lone eyelash that is so long and firmly grounded in the skin.  I wondered what made this one single eyelash stick it out when all it's other comrades jumped ship. It took the tough stuff (chemo) and hung in there anyway. Why weren't the other lashes as tough as this stubborn one?  I came to the conclusion that single eyelash was still there, because God intended for it to be there to remind me to hang in there too!

It made me think about people who stick out the tough times...   Rick and Sherri Burgess recently lost their 2 year old son.  They are carrying on for God and in honor of their sweet son.  When I interviewed Rick this week.  He was more determined than ever to do God's will, to work for the Kingdom of God.  He's hanging in there... because he says God has called him to help save others... to share the gospel.   He admits he alone couldn't carry on the way he does... He says God has held him up to be able to witness to others through his grief.  To see Rick and listen to him, I could feel God's awesome power.  The video of Rick witnessing at Bronners memorial service is among the most watched in the entire world.  Rick says he heard from thousands who's lives have been changed.  And many of Rick's sisters and brothers have risen up to offer support and love to this wonderful family.  God is holding the Burgess family firmly in his arms.

Another man who has hung in there through the ages is Emil Lang.  He's 105 years old.  He's still walking, talking and getting out of his house to go to church!  I know through the years he's endured heartaches, deaths of loved ones and tough times.  But he hasn't given up.  He has kept going and kept worshipping God through good times and bad.  In fact when I asked him about his secret to longevity he chuckled and said my church.  He says Shades Mountain Baptist is the reason he's lived this long.  He's rarely missed a Sunday in decades.  I just imagined how the church members must have supported him through tough times over the years.  I imagined the meals that must have shown up on his doorstep during family illnesses as those meals appeared at my front door during my cancer battles.  It's God's love shining through the church to a wonderful man with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face despite the fact he must an aches and  pains.  With a cane he quite nicely moves along the corridors of the church and reminds me that no matter how tough things get,  and even when it defies what's humanly possible, we  can hang in there with God's help.

You and Rick are a true inspritation to me. Though I have never met either of you your testimony for Christ both in word and deed connects to me. I too am a Christian who is enduring a very difficult time in my life but through it all I get strength daily from Father God and His wonderful Holy Spirit who help me carry my load. I will remember you in my daily prayers and ask that you do likewise for me.

Thank you for posting this uplifting message. I recently lost my father - he was my only surviving parent, having lost my mom 3 years ago. I never thought I would be this young and not have either of my parents. I promised my Dad that I would not sit around and feel sorry for myself; that I would live a good life. Sometimes it is hard, but I too am hanging in there, with the help of God!

Deborah
Dear Brenda- I am writing as your blogs have been so encouraging, I lost my Aunt and Uncle this last month in Atlanta as they were murdered by their 18 year old son. You see my Aunt was battling metastatic breast cancer, although her condition was terminal she did not live her life that way, she lived it preparing for eternity and encouraging and caring for other people. It is amazing how God works but God was preparing my heart through the loss of little Bronner. I made a decision to be a bolder stronger witness for Christ not knowing that would be tested. I witnessed to several of Joshua's friends and we are hearing stories about the changes. This is important because these kids are involved in an evil that I really have not been able to totally grasp. I have told this story to anyone that will listen because you never know when you are going to be facing a situation like our family and that truly the only thing that does matter is winning people to christ and living our lives for him. My Aunt like you Brenda loved God and made it a point in her life to make a difference and she did. I will never forget her courage and strength and the inspiring life she lived and I can only pray that God will everyday help me to become the Godly Woman I desire to be. I would like to ask everyone to please pray for Joshua, the first thing we said to him was that we loved him, his parents loved him and most importantly God loves him. Thanks so much!

Teresa
Rick you are a very insparational person. We should all follow God in the way you do.

Brenda, I just wanted to let you know how much you encouraged my teenage son on the Saturday of the Race for the Cure 2005. He saw you at your book signing at Brookwood Mall (I still have the copy he purchased). I had just been diagnosed with breast cancer and my friends and family had walked for me that day. So today I am returning the favor. You look beautiful and so courageous every night. Hang in there, be tough like that lone eyelash so many of us have have experienced. Remember God is in control.

Rose
Brenda, I admire your courage and I thank you for sharing your Truely Blessed spirit and we can ALL hang in there with Gods help I love this blog and keep hanging in there.

Hi Brenda, I have been a fan of yours for years. I thought you might be blessed by what my 91 year old mother told me recently. When I asked her the secret to living 91 years she said, "Well, I just keep going because if I stop...I might just get there."

I am serious when I tell you that I have prayed for you many times and will continue to lead our church and family to do the same.

Brenda, I thank you so much for bringing back matters of faith. I am so glad when someone has the medium and uses it for God's glory. My faith is never as strong as it should be, but everytime I see something like that segment or your blog today, I am growing stronger. My aunt is a blessing to me. In her 80's diagnosed with cancer (too many places to count) but Sunday, there she was in church with us. She cannot drive anymore, but family sees to it she makes it to church. She is such a blessing. Thank you again for your faith and sharing it with others.

Brenda, You are a true example of how God uses people to carry out his plan. We don't always understand but God is in control and has something special planned for you and your family. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. May God Bless You.

Brenda, You have truly touched my soul. You make me believe that no matter how hard things get to keep pressing on. God has truly used you in a positive way. I thank God for the strength that he has given you and the strength you have given others. BLESS YOU.

Brenda,

I admire your strength and your faith in God. You have had to endure so much. I pray for you and your family as you go through this. I pray that I can have the faith and relationship with the Lord that you seem to have.

What a great perspective of "hanging in there"! I have been following your blog for quite awhile but I can not help but smile on how God is using so many of his warriors to move forward with the Great Commission! Rick Burgess and his whole crew on the Rick and Bubba show and yourself are such testimonies on God's love! You are not questioning "Why is this happening to me?" but by your walk, you are saying "God, show me your next step!" God bless you Brenda!

Dear Brenda,

I read your blog and you are a great inspiration to us all. I have always been a News Fan of yours and I guess thru the years you start to think of that person as friend/family. I have faith that you will get better. God loves you more then you know. Somehow, we may not understand why, he is using you as an instrument of light to help others and to give hope, so you are truely chosen. And hope...is a great thing as well as faith.

Your friend,

Lucy M. Williams

Pam, It is so refreshing to hear someone speak of Faith and truly believe. Our Father has a way of testing us and then providing the miracle of Faith to see us thru. Our challenges seem great and I to have faced the decision of life and death and realized having God's faith gives comfort in a time of trouble.

Rest heavliy on support of others during this time of Faith. Prayer and support of others who are true believers in the Grace of God can provide a very uplifting part of your daily life. People can mock, challenge or doubt your Faith, but I can tell you by example, surviving in God's Grace is the greatest gift he may have. The option of true believers is, there is always the alternative of Going on Home and truly seeing God and be at his throne forever.

May God Bless you in all you do. Your public figure gives all of us a bright light. Even if the eye lashes are Fake for now.....

BRENDA,

WHEN MY EYEBROWS STARTED GROWING BACK AFTER MY CHEMO TREATMENT FROM BREAST CANCER SURGERY. I WONDERED WHY MY EYEBROW PENCIL WAS NOT COMING OFF WHEN I REMOVED MY MAKEUP. DR. WINCHESTER SHOWED ME. THROUGH HER FAITH, THAT I COULD BEAT THIS CANCER AND I AM NOW IN MY FOURTH YEAR. PRAISE GOD, HE IS SUCH A GOOD GOD. I AM KEEPING YOU IN MY PRAYERS.

Brenda, I got an email just the other day that I think says alot. "God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage" We know that we will face trials and I believe that how we go thru them is what makes us strong or weak. With God we are strong and can carry on with the mission he has given each and everyone of us. Without him we will fail. I thank God that people like yourself and Rick & Sherri Burgess have excepted your missions. I too lost a child almost 4 years ago and am more determined to follow my Lord and Savior for he gave me the gift of my children and I in turn will love, honor and follow him where ever he leads me. May God always watch over you and yours.

Hi Brenda, I had a double mastectomy on 1/28/08, before that I had 8 treatments of chemo and about to start 33 treatments of radiation as soon as my last drain tube comes out. I have read both of your books and want you to know that you have been an inspiritation to me. As a matter of fact I read your 2nd book 2X. God is so faithful. He is faithful when we don't understand and He has given me the strength to push on through. How are you doing? Are you doing chemo again? I pray for you every day. Also, like you, I have a couple of eyelashes. A sister in Jesus, Carolyn Hollinghead Hueytown, AL

Brenda, you and your family have been and will continue to be in my prayers. Thank you for publicly sharing your story, but most importantly, your faith. My grandson has just been diagnosed with cancer for the second time. He will be 8 in May. His story can be found at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/tuckerbeam. We pray that God will use us once again to bring Him glory through this difficult journey. Our church, The Church at Ross Station (http://www.rossstation.org), which currently meets at Bumpus Middle School in Lake Cyrus in Hoover, is having a special prayer service Tuesday night called ?Cancer: From Diagnosis to Victory?, and we would like to invite you to join us. This service is not just for my grandson, but is for anyone who has been affected by this disease. The service will start at 7pm. Again, thank you for your beautiful example of faith.

Brenda

Brenda, You are so right with God's Strength we can overcome so much. I just recently had to have a bilateral masetomy . I have been so overwhelmed by the support of my family and my friends they have all been my prayer warriors. God works in so many ways to show us that he is always there for us. My son told me when we found out that I had breast cancer that God would take care of me. He said that Through God all things were possible. That is very true. Thank you for being a inspiration to all women. Karen

I'm not a Baptist, BUT! I get inspired, every time I drive by Shades Mountain Baptist Church, when they're having a service at night. If that big round window is not the most amazing stained glass creation in the area, I don't know what is! Wow!

Who can see those eyelashes and eyebrows? Not with the bifocals I've got! I'm really lucky to have a wife who's willing to trim nasty, out of control horns!

I was blessed to know a member of my family, who lived a long time. He did ultimately have to give up doing much of anything. A broken hip, then an artifical one, then breaking that, yeah. It was hard on him. Somehow, he was still the patriarch of the family. Such wonderful, experienced folk are such amazing treasures! We haven't invented the time machine yet, and even if we ever do, I doubt it equal the insight we can get by sitting down and talking with one of the real old-timers.

Amazing writing, as always, Brenda. Great stuff!
