The family attended the Hoover Celebration last weekend. Veteran's Park was decked out with a huge tent providing shelter from the rain for vendors.
The police department exhibited their crime fighting robot had a great presence at the event. We were excited about the day. But there were storm warnings for the area.
The sky darkened and checking in at the station, we realized it wasn't going to be a relaxing day at the park. A huge ominous cloud rose from behind Spain Park High School. As the cloud got closer, the rain got a little harder and the sky got darker people started to run to the school or the parking lot for shelter.
Before retreating for the day due to the weather, my youngest son begged us to run and get a 3 dollar pizza. My husband relented.
That's when our little boy ran like the wind to get the prize..... a pizza! He grabbed it and tucked it under his arm to keep it protected as he ran.
It was time to run for safety. A kind lady in a golf cart gave us a ride to the tunnel.
We ended up in the cement tunnel that connects a joggers trail. On one side of the tunnel is the park on the other is a Jefferson State College building. It was funny as a family we had commented as we arrived how it would be a safe place in a storm.
We weren't the only ones looking for safety from the storm in the tunnel. There were about five golf carts, their drivers and a few other event goers, a policeman and my family. Our three boys, my husband Doug and myself.
The police officer remined us we were in the best spot possible. He was assured us it was safe. About that time the wind blew the rain sideways into the tunnel. He yelled get down. Everyone hit the gravel. My youngest son scooted under one of the golf carts.
I looked at him and wished I could do the same. But figured a good crouch would be just as good. The wind blew for what seemed like several minutes and the rain pelted us. I prayed and figured most people in the tunner were praying too.
A short time later, the assault stopped. We all stood up and brushed off the dirt and gravel from our legs. My little guy scooted out from under the golf cart as easily as he popped under there.
He rushed to the golf cart that he had put his 3 dollar pizza on. There is was safe and sound. I could see the look of relief on his face. He said, "My pizza! It's safe!"
We laughed, on that day, we were all ok, but the best news was that the pizza had survived the storm!
