Cutting the roof off!
category: Inspiration

We've renovated in the past.  So when  my husband and I decided to add a couple of rooms over the garage, I thought, no big deal.  I've been through a kitchen renovation, adding rooms and fixing up a sun room.  I was ready for the chaos.  I was ready for the things stacked and stashed here and there. I was ready to have closets empited into storage units and even the left over clutter that sits in various areas of the house, awaiting a new home.  I was even ready for wall to be knocked down.  But when the heavy rain came, would I be ready and have the faith to relax even when the water rushes into my house?

It's a matter of faith.  Everytime I want the house to be in perfect order, I remember good things happen in God's time.  Should I feel nervous without a roof over our home?  Think about it... with out that roof,  the rain comes in.  It can cause all sorts of problems.  It can cause wood to rot and belongings to  mildew.   Victims of violent storms know that after the roof blows off many belongings are ruined.

Isn't having a roof over your home, a lot like trusting God?  He covers you and wants to protect you.   When we stay covered by the Lords protection we can relax that the storms of life won't soak in and ruin our lives.

A sweet lady who watches our newscasts sent me a story about another woman who was in the late stages of her cancer battle.  She was in such pain, she decided to stay home instead of going to her treatment.  She was hurting.   In her pain, she called out to God and said, "God, I don't know you or anything about you but I want to put myself in your hands and turn things over to your will."

Then this woman's friend heard her quote scripture.  It was Isaiah 58 " Then your light will break forth like the dawn.  and your  healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard."

This woman's friend said, I thought you never read the Bible?  She replied, I've never opened a Bible.

But how could she quote scripture?

The story went on to report that the woman who had cancer, was healed.  She didn't have to deal with it again.  The Lord covered her with his Love, healing and wisdom.

I've decided, I'm not going to worry about the roof anymore.  I'm  just going to trust that the Lord has me covered roof or no roof!

I just finish reading your book "Getting Better Not Bitter". It was great! You're going to be at my church Saturday Maytown Baptist. I'm so looking forward to meeting and hearing your message. God Bless you and your family.

Brenda, my name is Eli and I used to live in AL. As of now, I live in FL but I occasionally look at local news in Birmingham just to see whats going on. I don't want any of this to come out the wrong way, but I noticed when you did your newscast your hairstyle was different, and I asked my friend who still lives up there, and now I understand. I am sorry for being so ignorant about such a delicate issue. I am so sorry to hear about your struggle, Brenda, but keep the faith!! I have always enjoyed turning to you and the ABC 33/40 team, and you will always be a familiar face, even with me down here in Miami. I will end saying this, and I hope it helps you Brenda......Philippians 4:13 : "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

BRENDA, I A 2 TIME CANCER SURVIVOR. I HAD BREAST CANCER TWICE AND HAD MASECTOMY BOTH TIMES. I AM A CHRISTIAN , WITHOUT THE GOOD LORD AND FAMIL AND FRIENDS I WOULD NOT HAVE MADE IT. MY HUSBAND HAD TO QUITE WORK TO TAKE CARE OF ME. IT WAS DAILY TO THE DR. AND IN/OUT OF BROOKWOOD HOSPITAL. YOU ARE SO BRAVE, BECAUSE YOU CONTINUE TO WORK. I WAS NOT ABLE TO DO THAT. I WAS A BANKER AND RELTOR. WILL WILL CONTINUE TO TRUST GOD FOR OUR CARE . SINCERELY, BOBBIE HILL (BEBE) TO MY GRANDS.

What a great analogy, Brenda. It is truly God speaking to us when we see confusion and turn it into trusting the Lord. Last week I was awaiting my pathology report (4 years out from breast cancer). A lump had suddenly arisen in my operated left side. The report returned "no malignancy found' parenchymal lymph node". What rejoicing I did! Thanks again for this wonderful story. It reminds me of yet another scripture, "I will abide in the shadow of His wings until these calamities are past". Like your roof, let's all just abide in the shadow of His wings". God is in control and has us "covered".

Brenda, your post always speak to me and the things that are going on in my life. Just a short while ago I received a call from my dearest friend since school, she is going to have a biopsy of a spot on her abdomen. Her doctor was adament that it must be done immediately, he wants it done this weekend. Please say a prayer for her. May God richly bless you for all the encouragement you give us all. As a breast cancer survivor, I know God never leaves us or forsakes us. How wonderful to know we have such a wonderful Savior. God bless, Vicki James

.....What's the old adage about not worrying about what you can't control? Water damage can be minimized. You don't want it running into furniture or bedding, of course. Sheetrock might be an issue, too. Dry, and paint over... As to floors, just try to get it up as soon as possible. Water won't instantly ruin wood. It's that sit and soak thing that really causes problems.

.....I'd also suggest that trusting in God is a LOT easier, and more reliable, than trusting in a roof. With God, there's no harrowing trips up the ladder with the tar bucket; contractors, noise and mess every 15 years; and no worries about trees falling on your faith.

.....Good luck on the renovations!

Brenda, Just want to tell you that I love your hair! I missed the night you said you were just going to "let it all hang out"...but my husband told me. You are an inspiration to all who know and watch you. Just now I prayed for your healing.

I'm so thankful that God is in control of our bad times as well as our good times. May God bless your roof!
