Testing on groundwater near oak trees in Toomer's Corner begins

Officials in Auburn plan to test the groundwater Monday around the poisoned trees to see if it has been tainted by the herbicide, Spike80DF.

Officials also plan to remove portions of the concrete to assess the root structures of the trees. Experts say it's too early to know whether the trees will survive at the Auburn University location.

They spent last week removing a large portion of the spoil, spreading a charcoal mix to absorb the poison and hoping for some good news about the condition of the oak trees.

The man charged with poisoning the trees, Harvey Updyke is living out of his car while waiting for his trial.
