An incident between a player and the head football coach of Spain Park High School is under investigation by school officials.

Coach David Shores has been placed on administrative leave after an alleged physical altercation with one of his players during football practice Tuesday.

Hoover Schools Superintendent, Andy Craig, tells ABC 33/40 the allegations are serious and an investigation is underway.

Media Relations Coordinator, Jason Gaston, says at the time of the incident witnesses were present.

"There were some witnesses on the field in the immediate vicinity," Gaston said. "Statements have been gathered from those people."

School officials will have a meeting Thursday morning with the football team to discuss the matter. Gaston says they will also begin talks of replacing Shores with an interim head coach.

Shores was beginning his third year as head coach of the school's football program. In two years, he led the Jaguars to a 14-9 record. Last year the Jags were 10-3 and made it to the quarterfinals of the playoffs.

Gaston says the investigation will last "as long as necessary."
